IAEA Head states Iran is to restart its uranium enrichment efforts soon
“They can have … in a matter of months, I would say, a few cascades of centrifuges spinning and producing enriched uranium, or less than that,” Rafael Grossi said during a recently aired interview.
He noted that while the U.S. attacks caused significant destruction, they didn’t completely disable Iran’s nuclear capabilities. “The capacities there, industrial and technological capacities. So if they so wish, they will be able to start doing this again,” Grossi added.
The United States carried out a major strike on June 22, deploying six bunker-busting bombs on the Fordo enrichment site, while simultaneously launching a barrage of cruise missiles at additional nuclear facilities in Natanz and Isfahan. These actions were part of an intensified effort to curtail Iran’s nuclear development.
Despite early U.S. claims that the strikes had completely dismantled Iran’s progress, more recent reports indicate the setbacks may only delay Iran’s program by a few months.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi admitted that the coordinated bombings from both the United States and Israel inflicted “excessive and serious” harm to the nuclear sites.
Grossi emphasized the depth of Iran’s nuclear expertise and resources: “Iran had a very vast ambitious program, and part of it may still be there, and if not, there is also the self-evident truth that the knowledge is there. The industrial capacity is there. Iran is a very sophisticated country in terms of nuclear technology, as is obvious. So you cannot disinvent this.”
