Torrential rain triggers floods in Russia
(MENAFN) Severe summer floods have swept through Russia’s Yakutia Republic in the Far East, submerging dozens of homes and prompting widespread evacuations. Triggered by torrential rains, the Indigirka River overflowed earlier this week, causing water levels to rise by 40 to 60 centimeters within 24 hours.
Caught off guard by the sudden flooding, residents fled their homes as emergency crews launched round-the-clock rescue and relief operations. Helicopters and drones are delivering supplies—such as food, heaters, and generators—to cut-off villages.
Regional authorities declared a state of emergency. “The situation remains difficult in the affected areas,” Yakutia head Aysen Nikolayev said Friday, adding that damage assessments would begin once the waters recede.
In Khara-Tumul, videos shared online showed cows stranded on a hilltop after escaping the rising floodwaters. Local officials confirmed the animals were later rescued.
Though water levels are now gradually receding in some areas, emergency patrols remain active. Scientists note that such floods are rare along the Indigirka and attribute the event to unusually heavy rainfall across central and mountainous parts of Yakutia.
