US Envoy Says Washington Hopes for Russia-Ukraine Talks Leading to Summit
In an interview aired Saturday, Witkoff characterizes the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which on Tuesday reaches its fourth anniversary, as a “silly war.”
“You know, everyone throws the word 'dignity' around. But what does dignity get you if you have that amount of killing there?” Witkoff said, noting that recent US-facilitated talks between Moscow and Kyiv have shown a “real positive effect in some respects.”
He adds that both Russia and Ukraine “don’t seem like they really want to fight with one another, and I don't think they do," suggesting that the primary obstacles to a peace deal lie “at the leadership levels.”
Witkoff explains that he and Jared Kushner are hopeful their proposals could bring both parties together soon, potentially leading to a summit between the presidents. He also mentions that such a meeting could occur at a trilateral level with Donald Trump participating, though Trump prefers to join only if he believes it will deliver the “best result.”
Regarding his personal interactions with Putin, Witkoff says the Russian leader has been “straight” about his red lines and objectives. He defends his visits to Moscow, emphasizing that understanding the other side’s positions is essential to reaching an agreement.
