China Accuses US of “Technological Coercion” Over AI Theft Claims
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said in Beijing that the claims from the US were unfounded and amounted to an attack on China’s progress in the AI sector. “The US claims are baseless and a slanderous smear against China’s achievements in the development of its artificial intelligence industry,” he told reporters.
Guo further called on Washington to reconsider its stance, urging it “to respect the facts, abandon its prejudices, stop technological suppression of China, and do more to promote technological exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.”
The response followed US accusations that China was among countries involved in large-scale efforts to obtain advanced American AI systems. According to reports, the White House described China as “chief among a group of nations” engaged in what it called industrial-scale attempts to extract frontier AI technology.
Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, stated in a memo circulated to federal agencies that the US government had information indicating that foreign actors, primarily based in China, were conducting coordinated efforts to replicate advanced AI systems on a large scale.
