Lebanon Rejects Role in Regional Conflicts, Calls for Diplomatic Solution

(MENAFN) Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated on Friday that Lebanon refuses to be treated as a “bargaining chip” in wider regional confrontations, stressing that the country is pursuing diplomacy as the only viable route toward lasting stability.

His remarks came during an informal gathering of European Union leaders and officials from nearby southern countries, held at the invitation of Greek Cyprus within the framework of its EU presidency, according to reports.

Aoun emphasized that Lebanon acts independently in defending its sovereignty and national interests, saying the country “refuses to be a bargaining chip in regional conflicts,” and negotiates in its own name.

He noted that Lebanon is currently engaged in diplomatic efforts conducted under US involvement, with backing from the EU and Arab states. The process, he said, aims to reach a durable arrangement that would stop ongoing Israeli attacks, secure a full withdrawal to internationally recognized borders, and allow the Lebanese state to extend authority across its entire territory.

Aoun also underscored that Lebanon, like other countries in the region, prioritizes de-escalation and long-term stability, arguing that diplomacy remains the only realistic path forward.

He further highlighted the consequences of recent Israeli strikes, referring to damage affecting medical personnel, hospitals, schools, journalists, and places of worship, as well as extensive destruction of villages and infrastructure, which he said has contributed to preventing displaced residents from returning home.
