Germain Tailors: The Quiet Confidence of Soft Tailoring

Germain Tailors - Product

SHANGHAI, CHINA, October 28, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- In a world of fast fashion and disposable style, Germain Tailors has spent more than a decade quietly building something different. Based in Shanghai, the house has developed a distinct voice in contemporary menswear by softening the rules of classic tailoring rather than abandoning them, creating garments that feel considered without feeling stiff.

A Shanghai Atelier With a European and Japanese Pedigree

Germain Tailors was established in the late 2000s by French and Asian tailors who trained in the European and Japanese tailoring industries before founding the house together. That dual heritage still shapes the brand today, blending the structure and precision associated with European tailoring with the restraint and attention to detail often found in Japanese craftsmanship.

This cross-cultural foundation is not just a biographical detail. It explains why the house has never fit neatly into a single national tailoring tradition, and why its garments read as both classic and quietly modern at once.

Soft Tailoring as a Signature Style

Every tailoring house eventually needs a point of view, and for Germain Tailors that point of view is called soft tailoring. The term describes a clean cut with a relaxed, contemporary silhouette, an approach that keeps a jacket looking sharp without making it feel rigid on the body.

Rather than chasing one fixed silhouette season after season, the house treats soft tailoring as a philosophy that runs through everything it makes, whether the piece in question is a formal suit or a weekend jacket.

Craft That Spans Formal and Casual Wardrobes

A tailoring house is ultimately judged by what it can actually make, and Germain Tailors covers considerable ground. The atelier handmakes bespoke and made to measure suits, blazers and coats, and extends the same craftsmanship to shirts, unstructured jackets, chinos, knitwear and denim.

This range means a client can source both the suit for a boardroom meeting and the jacket for a weekend away from the same house, built with the same standards of handwork.

Two Collections, One Standard of Craftsmanship

Rather than offering a single undifferentiated product line, Germain Tailors organizes its work into two distinct collections. There is a Neapolitan sartorial line for classic formal tailoring, and a tailored casualwear collection called Weekend for softer, more relaxed dressing. Both are offered exclusively made to measure.

This structure lets the house speak to two different moods of the modern man’s wardrobe without diluting its identity, since both collections are still built on the same soft tailoring principles.

A Global Fabric Library

Fabric is where tailoring quality is often decided before a single stitch is cut, and Germain Tailors treats sourcing as a serious part of its craft. The house selects fabrics from partners in Italy, England, China and Japan, offering a selection of more than a thousand choices of natural fibers.

That breadth of sourcing gives clients room to express personal taste, whether they lean toward traditional English wools, Italian lightness or Japanese textures, all under one roof.

Three Pieces That Tell the Story

The clearest way to understand a tailoring house is to look at what it actually makes. Three pieces from the current Germain Tailors online collection show how the house pairs heritage mills with its soft tailoring approach.

The Wool Greatcoat by Abraham Moon. Inspired by the long overcoats once issued to armed forces for harsh weather, this greatcoat is cut from a dense 800g, 100% wool cloth woven in the UK by the Abraham Moon mill. Its felted construction makes it naturally water-resistant, and each coat takes around 30 hours of handwork in the Shanghai atelier. It is available in two colours, including a blue-grey Airforce Blue.

The Fresco Blazer by Hardy Minnis. Built from Hardy Minnis’ Fresco III 2-ply wool, a cloth long valued as a four-season, travel-friendly fabric, this blazer is hard-wearing, breathable and resistant to creasing. It is half-canvassed through the chest and lapels for structure without stiffness, and comes unlined with a 3-roll-2 front. Clients can choose a Trim Neapolitan fit or a Comfort Soft fit with a natural spalla camicia shoulder, the house’s soft tailoring philosophy in its purest form.

The Corduroy Trousers by Brisbane Moss. For the Weekend side of the wardrobe, these trousers use Brisbane Moss’ flagship 8-wale cotton corduroy, a heavy 470g cloth in a distinctly English colour palette. Offered in trim, single-pleat comfort and double-pleat wide-leg fits, they pair naturally with the matching corduroy jacket and soften with every wear.

Together, the three pieces show the range of the house: a coat built to last decades, a blazer made for travel, and trousers made for relaxed weekends, all made to order in Shanghai.

A Flexible Path From Consultation to Purchase

Bespoke tailoring has traditionally meant a slow, in person process, but Germain Tailors has built a few different ways for clients to engage with the house. Collections are available at the atelier in Shanghai, through trunk shows, and online for clients who have already been measured or who wish to purchase made to order products.

This mix of in person craftsmanship and digital convenience reflects how modern clients actually want to shop for tailoring today, without asking them to choose between tradition and ease.

A Quiet Kind of Confidence

Germain Tailors has built its identity not around a single trend but around a consistent idea: tailoring can be precise without being unforgiving. By combining a French and Asian founding story, a soft tailoring philosophy, careful fabric sourcing and a flexible path from consultation to purchase, the house has created a wardrobe language that feels personal rather than prescribed.
